Sid the Science Kid Cake

When Angeli of Art by Angeli asked me to make a Sid the Science Kid cake for her son, I had never heard of the character before...he's so cute!

I got to make Sid and his dinosaur friend for Gavin. Imagine my pleasant surprise when mom Angeli sent me the pictures from the party today!

Amazing, can you believe Angeli doesn't do this for a living? She even shares the printables she created especially for the occasion on her blog. Definitely check it out...she has so many great crafts and projects chronicled there.

When April reached out to me recently for a Tron Light Cycle cake for her son Isai, I couldn't believe my luck. I looooved the look of the movie, so I was more than happy to take a stab at making a stylized 3D Tron Light Bike!

Mario and Princess Peach in Love Cake

When my friend Ken asked for a Mario Brothers themed Valentine's day cake for his lady love, I was excited to help him out. As most of you know, I love a) cake and b) video games, so this was a no brainer for me. I decided to go old school and have the princess and her main man in all their 8-bit glory, along with some 8-bit hearts and the...coin box? question mark box...thing? from Super Mario Brothers. You know, this thing:

The cake was, of course, red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Creature Comforts...On Ice!

Amanda, one of my fave customers (she consistently has the best ideas for cakes) outdid herself once again. For her mother's birthday, she wanted a "Creature Comforts on ice" cake! Now, I don't know if I've talked about this here before but I loooove Creature Comforts. Before Wallace and Gromit, Nick Park made Creature Comforts, a series of claymation shorts that involve animals in a zoo describing their experiences there. It was a big part of my childhood (they reran it on Nickelodeon all the time) and when Amanda asked me to make combine the little guys from CC with a winter wonderland theme, I was more than happy to!

Above you can see: the candy lake I made for the poor little penguin to wipe out on, a little tree for a bird to hide behind while he throws his snowballs, a fun sheep making snow angels, another penguin blowing out the candle on his birthday cake and a bear dressed up as a snowman!

Scott, a bud who has ordered some really fun cakes in the past (you can see them here and here) turned 35 this year, and to commemorate the occasion ordered a Eddie Van Halen guitar stripes cake. You know, it seems simple enough, just a bunch of stripes, but man did it take time! It was definitely worth it though, Scott was thrilled with his cake!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Party!

Yay Harry Potter! My x-treme love for everyone's fave boy wizard inspired me and my very good friend Tammy to throw a fun dinner party/birthday party for one of our most favorite friends, Kiki. The cake you see above is my 14-layer Dark Mark vanilla cake covered in yummy chocolate. The Dark Mark was made by cutting out a stencil and then very carefully adding luster dust over the stencil. Remove and voila!

We had a smaller dinner before all the fun started, and Tammy, who is an amaaaazing cook, whipped up some amazing dishes with the help of yours truly:

Our Marauder's Map menu. This weirdly took probably the longest of anything I did for this party, haha. Finding the right font, figuring out how to turn the only good Marauder's Map image online into an image that would look good on brown paper...phew! But it was well worth it. If anyone wants the file, send me an email and I'll email it to you!

Pumpkin Soup in hollowed out Kabocha squashes, with floral wire wrapped in floral tape for the handles. Our intention was for them to look like little cauldrons, and I think we succeeded!

Golden Snitch inspired Beef Wellington: Yummy, very British Beef Wellington topped with a round of puff pastry and flanked by mashed potato wings.

Godric's Hollow Rest in Peas...buttered peas with toast gravestones. If I was more on point I would have drawn the Deathly Hollows on one of the gravestones, missed opportunity!

And for dessert, two lovely pies. Pumpkin had lightning scars, Apple had the Dark Mark.

After dinner, all our other buds came over for boozie Butterbeer, treats and hang out time!

Handmade chocolate coins dusted with luster dust for Gringott's Bank.

Handmade cranberry-apple jewels for Ravenclaw's Jewel Vault.

Butterbeer! Looking around online, we weren't so into the recipes we found so we decided to wing it. We combined apple cider, apple brandy (such as Apple Jack) and butter extract flavoring. Topped off with brandy flavored whipped cream, the result was an seasonal, delicious drink that had the slight smell of butter but not much of the flavor. It was great!

Dark Mark Hummus!

Wand shaped cheese straws. Cheese straws must seems awfully old school and sort of out of date, but believe me, if you use Smitten Kitchen's recipe for your next get together, you will NOT be disappointed. They are SO GOOD.

Last but not least, we hung up an empty gold frame for everyone to take pictures in. We even took video, to replicate the moving portraits in Harry Potter. Dorky? Yes. Fun? Yes yes yes. Both Tammy and I are in the photo above, it was so much fun hosting this party with her, I can't wait for our next project together!

Morning Glory Cake

So now that the movie is out, I can tell you a little secret. Remember my New Jersey cake?

It was a cake that had actually been commissioned for the movie Morning Glory! I went to see the movie last night and sad but true, the scene my cake was in ended up on the cutting room floor. C'est la vie, thems the breaks, but it was so much fun making the cake (me being a Jersey girl and all) that it was totally worth it in the end. Brooklyn Bride Cozy Couple Photoshoot!

The lovely ladies Elisabeth and Miya at You + Me were kind enough to reach out and ask me to make the desserts for a photoshoot that they were going to do for Brooklyn Bride. The pictures went up today and I am amazed...so beautiful! You can see the final photoshoot at Brooklyn Bride, and check out some extra pictures at You + Me.

I made pears dipped in caramel and chocolate, chocolate dipped canele (the best little french dessert ever), a lovely simple cake covered in brown sugar whipped buttercream and topped with chocolate dipped fresh figs, and some yummy leaf shaped ginger cookies. Enjoy!

Autumn Cupcakes

These little guys were a gift from a father (who does not live in NY) to his daughters who were going to be together in NY for a short time...how sweet is that! The cupcakes were half chocolate, half pumpkin spice, with brown sugar whipped buttercream with royal icing moss. Enjoy!

Hillary and Dan's Wedding

My very awesome friends Dan and Hillary got married this summer, and not only did I get to be in the wedding (first time bridesmaid, so much fun!), but I also made the wedding cake(s). The bridesmaids all wore different dresses of our choosing, the only rule being that they had to be a range of pinks. The concept was so sweet and modern and fun, I decided to use it as my inspiration for the cakes. We decided on four cakes, vanilla with fresh berry frosting. I tried to use as little food coloring as possible, so the colors are soft but I think so pretty, they really complimented the wedding's natural, outdoorsy, stylish vibe. All flowers are edible.

Congrats to Hillary and Dan, and a special shout out to Hill, who was the very best bride a bridesmaid could ask for. : )

Mad Men Cake

This cake was made for Tony and his fiancé Annie, a gift from his coworkers who wanted to wish him well before he left to get married and go on his honeymoon. I was told that the couple loves Mad Men (as do I), so I was excited to use www.madmenyourself.com as the inspiration for my cake! If you haven't had a chance to visit to that site, definitely go when you have a chance. It is really fun and the illustrations are adorable.

Lady Gaga Cake!

This cake I made pretty much because I just wanted to, which was fun and a nice change of pace! I brought it to my friends birthday party (Happy bday Kat & Hillary!) where it was a big hit. Some people got the references right away, while most of the men were just totally puzzled, haha. But the birthday girls got it, which is all that matters. For your edification:

Glasses on Top - inspired by Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce. The cigarettes were made from plain white candy cigarettes that I colored and painted and tore up to make look like real, smoked cigs! PS smoking is not cool, fact.

Top Tier - inspired by Lady Gaga's police tape outfit in the video Telephone.

Middle Tier - inspired by Gaga's appearance on the VMAs, she wore a white lace outfit with pearls, and then at the end of her performance, blood came out of her outfit. It was wild and awesome.

Bottom Tier - inspired by Gaga's amazing outfit in the video Paparazzi. With her crazy Mickey Mouse glasses and matching outfit, of course Alexander Skarsgard loved her. Or DID HE.

Jack's Big Music Show - Mel's Super Swell Dance Party Edition!

When April ordered a Jack's Big Music Show cake for her son with a specific episode in mind, I was so excited! I looked at tons of pictures and some clips of the episode online and found out that in this specific episode, Mel gets to be a DJ instead of a drummer! So cute. Fun Groom's Cake and 100th Post!

Liz and Tom are an awesome couple who clearly have a great sense of humor. Liz wanted a fun groom's cake to present to Tom at their rehearsal dinner, and asked that the theme be "Everything Tom joked about having at the wedding but I wouldn't let him". HA! Some of Tom's amazing ideas included pictures of himself on everything, a baseball theme, and raunchy toppers. As you can see I kept the raunchiness to some fun mudflap girls on the side of the cake, to be replaced by super cute non edible toppers (at the request of the bride) that they could keep! Congratulations Liz and Tom!!

Monarch Butterfly Wedding Cake and Cupcakes

270 cupcakes, a two tiered cake, and probably a solid month making gelatin butterflies. To say I grew attached to this project is probably a bit of an understatement...I was almost sad to see the little guys go!

When Kelly and Doug told me that they would be releasing real Monarch butterflies at their wedding in (my fave state) NJ, and that they wanted Monarchs on their cake, I knew I would have to go above and beyond and find a new way to make these butterflies look as real as possible. After a ton of research online, I found the perfect solution...gelatin! By using colored gelatin on specially made mats, I was able to make orange and yellow butterflies that, with some edible food dye and fondant bodies, turned into lovely, delicate butterflies!

I was so excited to learn something new, and when it culminated in such a beautifully put together wedding, well, that was just the icing on the cake!

My Bday! Cookies, Favors & Unfinished Cake

So la di da! I turned 30 in April. I bet you thought I was like totally ageless, cause in the logo, which if you did not know is literally a picture of me, I look very young. Well it is a fact, time marches on. But that's ok, because I love birthdays!

For my birthday this year, I went to my father's house in NJ...he is surrounded by lovely nature and has a great deck, so it was perfect for a relaxed girl's weekend. I gave everyone goodie bags and in them I put:

1. Home made MASH cards (remember that game? Mansion - Apartment - Shack - House? Love it)
2. New Jersey cookies with a little edible heart shaped sprinkle
3. Glow stick bracelets
4. Fear Street book by R.L. Stine. Did anyone read these growing up? I LOVED them when I was in middle school, I thought they were so scary!
5. A mix cd for people to listen to on the way to Jersey
6. Personalized M&Ms that were given to my by a friend...with my picture on them : )
7. Home made fortune tellers

Below you can see some pics of the goodie bags, the goodies, and then...the unfrosted cake. Can you believe I made a heart shaped coconut cake for myself, with fluffy frosting and lovely toasted coconut, and then forgot to take a picture of the final product! Ugh. Oh well. It was my birthday, I can be lazy about taking cake pics if I want to.

Gisela and Anthony's Wedding

Gisela and Anthony recently got married during a very sweet and intimate ceremony at their apartment in Brooklyn, and I was so honored to be invited to take part in their nuptials. The couple made all the food with the help of friends and did such an amazing job decorating their apartment, I was so impressed! To contribute to the wedding I made them a vanilla cake with raspberry frosting decorated with some simple handmade sugar flowers. Congratulations guys!

This cake was made for my main man's birthday...Jim is a middle school science teacher, and he also plays the bass, so when I saw this image on Wear Science I knew it was a match made in heaven. I had come off of a long holiday caking binge with many orders, so I kept this cake simple with gray frosting (yummm) and the image in fondant. The cake was coconut pecan with cream cheese frosting. Enjoy!

MSKCC/Thomson Reuters Cake and Cookies

This one was made over the summer...silly me, I forgot to post it! Finding it in my cake pictures folder was a nice surprise.

This cake was made for Thomson Reuters, to kick off their bake sale for MSKCC (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, otherwise known as "Where Cake Hero gets her steady paycheck and health insurance from"). It was a fun and lucky coincidence that I got to make a cake for something that would benefit the institution where I work! MSK is a great place, I was so pleased to be able to help out with this one. Enjoy!

Louisiana Cake

This cake is special, because it comes with an announcement. First, the cake:

It is a chocolate cake with peppermint buttercream frosting. My friend Scott asked his friends to email me with their thoughts on what his birthday cake should be, and while there were some pretty interesting and fun suggestions ("Something with a pig shredding a guitar solo, with sausages for musical notes"), most of them tied in to where Scott was born and raised, New Orleans, Louisiana. I decided to make a New Orleans cake with a fleur-de-lis in honor of the Saints, and a Magnolia blossom, which is the state flower.

Now, for my announcement.

I WILL MAKE 50 CAKES, ONE FOR EACH STATE IN AMERICA!

Tadaaaa tada tada tadaaaaa! That is my goal. I have given myself as much time as I need, but if anyone wants in on this project, I will be posting a list in the sidebar soon that will show what states have been made and what states remain to be made. If you are in the NY area and want to honor youR home state in cake form, then send me an email with your order! New Jersey has already been made, but since it is my home state I am thinking about ending this with ANOTHER NJ cake. A few states have already been claimed by friends but if you are set on having a state cake then email me and we'll see what we can work out!

Ponyo Cake

For two years now, I have participated in the PS 234 annual auction. A good friend of mine teaches there, and meeting all the parents (it's an elementary school in NY) and making a cake for one generous person is so much fun. This year I was very lucky, because the parent who won my cake requested a Ponyo cake! For anyone who has not seen this adorable movie, I suggest you go see it as soon as you can. Ponyo is a little fish who lives in the ocean and dreams of being a real girl. It's so magical and I can see why four year old Jade loves it so much.

I decided to show Ponyo running on the waves rising out of the ocean. In the movie, the waves morph into fish as they rise out of the ocean, and then become regular waves again as they crash back down.

The cake was a delicious dark chocolate with fresh strawberry frosting. Happy birthday Jade!

Evan and Ashley's Wedding

Over the summer Ashley and Evan, my lovely neighbors, came to me wondering if I could make a skee-ball themed wedding cake and cupcakes for them. I was so honored that they had asked me, and so happy that they wanted to do something fun, creative and non-traditional. Evan is the proud head of Brewskee-Ball, the world's first Skee-Ball league (check out all the info here).

As you can see from the pictures below, I decided to make each flavor a different point value, each with a little fondant skee ball inside! The main cake was dark chocolate with a vanilla buttercream and sported Ashley and Evan's cute Pez toppers and the Brewskee-Ball logo. Congratulations guys!

Brandi's 30th

FYI the coloring in the second picture is closer to the real thing...I made a sort of peachy pink fondant color and brushed it in "champagne" luster dust...pretty!

Jack's Big Music Show

Here is another one that has been waiting to be posted for quite some time. I'm actually really excited for a few reasons: 1. I thought for sure that the last time my computer crashed I had lost these pics, but yay! I found them. 2. Rachel and her husband seem like the sweetest people, and the email that they sent me (which you will find below) seriously brought tears to my eyes. I have made these guys from JBMS a few times now and I feel sort of a sense of ownership with them (I wish I had invented them!) and to see that they were so appreciated by this family really makes me feel so happy. So happy birthday Dylan, and thanks to Rachel and fam for their kind words!

Hi!

I am sorry this is so late, but I wanted to thank you so very much for the cake, it was amazing and it made his birthday what it was, as we weren't having a huge party but this cake was the highlight. We didn't tell anyone about it until the party, so you can imagine the reaction. Best of all my son loved it, when we took it out of the box he clapped his hands and tried to dive towards it to get to it, of course I wouldn't let him. haha

After the party was over, I carefully took each character off along with whatever else I could take off and then we cut into the cake. The cake was amazing, yes we did share with a few friends and the birthday boy as well. haha

I was so impressed by the work of the characters that we decided to keep them as a memento from his first birthday. I put them in a box and let them get hard, the we shellacked them, stuck them into some spray painted Styrofoam and then put into a shadow box that we have hung in his room. (see pictures attached.) My husband and I thank you again for that amazing cake, it made his first birthday more special for him then we could have ever imagined.

Baby Shower Cake

So finally I have brought my camera to work, cause so sad, my computer at home died. I will be sharing a few cakes in the next few days that were made over the summer, my apologies to everyone who has been waiting!

This cake was ordered by my bud Erin for our mutual friend Nancy, who is pretty much the best and one of the most fun people I know. The cake was modeled after the invitation to her baby shower. Like I said, these posts are pretty late cause the baby is here now! Congrats Nancy!!

Liz (who I also made the 80s cupcakes for) asked for these for her nephew Gabriel's 2nd birthday...so cute!

On a side note, here you can see how bad I am at taking photos and then trying to correct them in photoshop...the colors in Liz's picture of the cupcakes at the party are much closer to what they looked like in person. Slippery Soap hardly even looks purple in mine. Thanks for the pics, Liz!

When Hank asked me to make a purple zebra striped cake for his lady Meredith, the first thing I thought of (is this weird?) was the Fruit Stripe Gum zebra, Yipes! Remember that gum? Oh the 80s.

Twilight and New Moon Cakes!

I am excited for this post! This past weekend I made cakes for two lovely ladies who heart all things Twilight (as do I...who can resist?). I was given free reign so I decided to dedicate one to the Cullen Family (their cake has the Cullen Crest, and, you can't see it in the pictures, but the blue SPARKLES!) and one dedicated to the Quileute wolf pack from New Moon. As you can see, the Twilight Cake has the lovely blues and silvers of Catherine Hardwicke's movie, and the New Moon cake is warmer, with earth tones and a gold moon, like in Chris Weitz's take on Stephenie Meyer's awesome books.

Twilight cake was red velvet, New Moon cake was vanilla butter cake with chocolate cinnamon buttercream.

I wonder which cake New Moon Bella would choose? : )

This cake was a birthday cake for my friends Sarah and Thea...there's really no story behind this cake. I just saw these mustaches on bakeitpretty.com, and decided that giving those out at the party would be the perfect time to put my faux bois mustache cake into action! Bwahaha.

Seas It Cake & Cupcakes

I was asked to make a cake by Amanda (who had requested one of my all time favorite cakes, the Creature Comforts cake) for the organization Seas It, that she runs with her husband, Todd. Seas It is a great non-profit that teaches "cancer recovery through recreation".

You can read the amazing and touching story here, but basically Todd was told was that he had only months to live. Through hard work and the loving support of his wife Amanda, he is working towards recovery and doing great, five years later! The cakes and cupcakes were for a fundraiser for Seas It, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. The event was inspiring and touching, and the location, their lovely house by the shore, was the perfect setting. Amanda asked me to make a cake commemorating their home, their organization, and Todd's amazing achievement. Congratulations, Todd, Amanda, and Seas It!

2009 Brooklyn Kitchen Cupcake Cookoff

I'm so excited! Yesterday I, along with almost 60 others (according to the lovely folks at Brooklyn Kitchen) entered the Cupcake Cookoff which took place at Union Pool. There were lots of amazing cupcakes, and of the four prizes awarded by the judges (Exotic Flavor, Simple Flavor, Exotic Decoration, Simple Decoration) I won for Simple Decoration! I got a totally sweet cupcake carrier along with some very pretty sanding sugars and other little decorating items from their store. The event was fun, relaxed and it was so nice to meet and greet with some of my fellow Brooklyn bakers.

Here are pics of some of my cupcakes (vanilla cake with fresh strawberry frosting), along with a picture of one of my little birds that made it's way to my voting slot. I have also included a picture of the sweet sign my man made for me when I was assigned my number (I live close to Union Pool so he was able to run home and make it real quick for me). Thanks to the judges, and to all my awesome buds who came out and supported me! Yay cupcake!

Chuck E. Cheese Cake!

So for the first time I decided to make my own cake for my bday. I was having a little-kid-birthday themed party, and since I was born in 1980, the Chuck E. Cheese...park? arcade? was a big part of my childhood. Apparently they have changed the logo since I went last...now it is much cuter and mouse-like. When I was growing up, Chuck E. Cheese was pretty much a creepy rat. That was the logo I decided to go with. The flavor was Hummingbird cake with cream cheese frosting.

I have also included pictures of the goodie bags I gave out at my birthday. They included: slap bracelets, Pop-Rocks, stacking pencils (or rocket pencils), dragon stickers, and lollipops, amongst other things. Enjoy!

Phew! After a very hectic holiday season I am now finally able to sit down and share some pics. These here are some photos of only a few of the 17 cakes I made for a bud. It took a long time and lots of elbow grease but it was a lot of fun and when it was done, I was definitely impressed with myself! 17 cakes was no joke!

Unfortunately I was a little lazy about taking nice pictures...I was so beat after the cakes that I decided to just take a quick few. I have also included a pic of all the layers of cake, and a picture of all the cakes stacked up in my fridge. Yowza.
